Best Uses of Campaign Songs

As previously mentioned, theme songs can play a big part in a campaign if used well. Below are three of my favorite campaign theme songs or election songs. 

*Note: I chose these campaign songs only based on the use, message, effectiveness, or relevance of the song in the campaign. It does not relate to my personal feelings or views about the candidates. 

1. "This Land is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie - George H.W. Bush 

Former President George H.W. Bush used this song to help boost his campaign in 1988. I believe this song is effective because it is widely known and already has a strong strong following for the older generations. Most people that have grown up in the United States know this song. It praises our country and aims to bring people together. Many people in both political parties have used this song for other campaigns and it seems to be well received all around. The song has been so widely used and associated with our country that it is considered the "unofficial national anthem." This song is especially useful for republican candidates because their songs often promote patriotism and cater to older generations.

2.  "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" by Stevie Wonder - Barak Obama

In 2012, former President Barak Obama used this popular Stevie Wonder song for his victory on election day. This song is a great choice because it is upbeat, soulful, and stands out from other candidates. It also is a great choice because it promotes a phenomenal black artist. Obama, as the first black president, is helping give more people of color a voice in the community and honoring his heritage. This song was also very well-known and is enjoyed by a variety of ages which is important to a Democratic campaign since many of their voters are young. This campaign used many songs outside of the standard which helps promote the message and tone of his campaign. "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" is about acknowledging mistakes within a relationship and promising dedication. The lyrics are not political in nature but Obama was using them as a means to show his devotion to the people (especially minorities) and his position. Obama was paving the way for a major change and used his music to tell that story as well.

3. "High Hopes" by Frank Sinatra - John F. Kennedy

Former President, John F. Kennedy, used this as his official campaign theme song in 1960. Like the other two songs this is also a widely popular in the United States. Frank Sinatra is famous for his beloved songs and outstanding voice even still to this day. "High Hopes" is an upbeat song that talks about looking forward to a better future. All of the lyrical verses are fun and child-like but come back to the same theme of staying positive and persevering. People of all ages listen and enjoy this song so it caters to a large audience as well. This song is effective because it makes the listener feel hopeful and inspired to keep moving forward towards bigger and better things.
